Nigeria to achieve 10m mass-metering by 2023 –NERC

The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has said that the country will achieve its planned 10 million National Mass-Metering project by 2023.

 

This is even as the Commission said they are rounding off the ground zero of the mass-metering in December while by 2022 they will fully achieve the supply of four million distribution of the mass metering.

 

Speaking during a stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on the National Mass-Metering programme, a general manager at the Commission, Mr Shamsudeen Muhmud Zubair, said the programme would in small measure help ensure steady supply of electricity across the federation.

 

Managing Director of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Dr Jamilu Isiyaku Gwamna, also said the intervention of the Federal Government in the mass-metering would, no doubt, ensure speedy and equitable distribution of the metre across the federation, and will certainly regulate issues of energy thefts and bypassing of metres in supplying of power.

 

He similarly denied that the KEDCO is using adulterated metre, which has a high speed, to shortchange  customers; the company metres were nicknamed Mai Barewa. While assuring that KEDCO is doing all it could to ensure that all its franchise areas of Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa enjoyed uninterrupted power supply of 24 hours, he called on customers to reciprocate by settling their energy tariffs.

 

Shamsuddeen Zubairu Mahmoud, who is the General Manager, said as far back as 2005 when the industry was even government owned, a number of regulations have been put in place which has to do with how customers are served. “Following privatisation in 2013, we have had a number of new developments.

 

So, we realise that there’s a need to have some amendments, some changes in this regulation.

 

“In line with the process, we developed a consultation paper and we exposed it to the public, requesting them to make comments on this consultation paper that has to do with amendments we are proposing or changes to these regulations. “We gave them period from June, July to August or so within which comments were harvested.

 

“After doing that, we realised also that there’s need for us to go round and meet those who were unable to respond to these comments so that we can hear from them directly.

 

“Secondly, we realised that there has been numerous complaints on service by the Discos. So, we used this opportunity also to directly interact with customers that have complaints.

 

“We will sit with the customers and also with the Discos or their representatives so that we can resolve these complaints.

 

“The national metering programme is an initiative of the Federal Government together with the Commission of course, which is something we have been clamouring for long.”
