Nigerian farmers lost $268m earnings to armyworm –AATF

African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), said its focus on Nigeria’s agricultural sector, was to help farmers mitigate the effects of the deadly armyworm that has caused them a whopping sum of $268 million in 2017. The Executive Director of AATF, Dr. Canisius Kanangire, who has been on an official visit to Nigeria, disclosed this to Saturday Telegraph in Abuja. Kanangire noted that Nigeria was very strategic to the African continent, and that boosting its agriculture and food production was equal to saving entire Africans from food shortage.

“The Fall Armyworm (FAW) is negatively affecting the food production and incomes of several producer households across Nigeria, resulting in more than 268 million dollars’ worth of losses in earnings as recorded in four states alone, as of November 2017,” he said.

He also disclosed that AATF has initiated several measures and introduced projects that help to protect farmers’ crops, boost yields and also improve their finances. “AATF set up Agridrive Limited, an agritech company working with farmers to unlock agribusiness opportunities in Africa. “With offices in Nigeria and Kenya, Agridrive creates business opportunities for farmers through developing quality products and services as well as new markets while leveraging on the power of agricultural technology.”
