A number of Nigerian Twitter users have hit out at Afro-fusion singer, Burna Boy, after he stated that he was the best since the days of Fela.
Burna Boy, who also started calling himself an “African Giant” months back following a string of stellar achievements in the last two years, added that nobody paved the way for him in recent times as far as the Nigerian music terrain was concerned.
Although he became the latest Nigerian musician to miss out on the Grammys awards nod after the likes of Femi and Seun Kuti in recent years, Burna Boy claimed to be the best after the days of Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, on Wednesday.
It all began with a blogger identified as Jezzy Joseph on Twitter, stating that while not undermining the achievements of Burna Boy in two years, the singer should be humble and mindful of the fact that some music stars paved the way for him.
“FACT! I always knew I was and I am THE BEST. Everyone you think is the best KNOWS I’m BEST since Fela Kuti. But @timayatimaya told me something a long time ago that made me not care about being the best. “The World can do without the Best” the world will still spin regardless,” the 28-year-old “Ye” singer wrote in a tweet.
When reminded that some acts paved the way for him for the acceptance of Afrobeat, with @JezzyJoseph tweeting again thus: “Where Were you since 2010-2018? I mean where the f..k are you when Afrobeat was struggling to hit the mainstream? The BEST paved the way for you. You came in when the table has already been set and here you’re claiming the BEST since Fela.”
Lashing back once more, Burna Boy added: “lol. NOBODY paved shit for me. Everybody dey find them own. I bin out here, if you knew the way they made us look weak by begging and paying the western world to like us you will see that no table was set and I’m the one that brought you the respect you currently enjoy,” Burna countered.
The ‘African Giant’ singer had earlier written: “The same people that wish you the best to your face are the same people that hope and pray you Fail so that they can feel better about themselves. That’s just Life. That’s why complements mean nothing to me cuz hate, Jealousy and ‘it shoul have been me’ are sugar coated by them.”
However, not just the blogger feels Burna Boy should acknowledge 2Face, D’banj, Wizkid, Psquare and others as pacesetters. Many others on Twitter soon joined in, with @FeralJack_ writing: “2face, Dbanj, Psquare, 9ice, Wizkid, Davido and the other OGs did it before you. They paved the way for you. Give respect to whom it’s due” while @volqx weighed in with: “No one is talking about Don Jazzy , Reminisce, Olamide , No one is talking about Psquare, Dbanj, Davido, Banky W, Wizkid, Simi etc.”
On his own, @Utdzoba wrote: “Wizkid spent almost 4 months in the US last year. Making good music with the powerhouses of Hollywood.
Davido also have been consistent matching records set by the likes of 2face, Psquare and D’banj.
Now we have Burna Boy(Van Dijk) “ 2 season wonder” who thinks he is the Best! While @UNCLE_AJALA added: “Even as bad as Nigeria is, we are still saying that the labour of our heroes past, shall never be in vain, but Burna Boy just rubbished the labour of PSquare, 2 Baba, 9ice, Wizkid, Dbanj, Davido and many others that have done so much for afro beat in Nigeria with his tweets” as @Olamideofficial wrote: “Seriously people caused it. Normal level burna shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence with the likes of Wizkid, Davido and Olamide. They paved the way for him and they have also been consistent for years let alone 2face, Dbanj and Psquare. It’s disrespect of the highest order” and @_orahh pitched in thus: “Burna boy never even win Grammy, just nominations oh, we are not hearing word again! Wah if he had won? Ololololo world for don end.”
