…minister lauds new role

The Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, has congratulated the Director-General/CEO of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Mansur Bako Matazu, on his recent appointment as the Chairperson, Board of Governors of The African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD).
Sirika, who stressed that Professor Matazu’s latest appointment is worthy of commendation, also lauded the NiMet boss for his dedication and commitment to public service ever since he assumed office as the head of Nigeria’s National weather prediction organisation.

Following the eighth extraordinary session of ACMAD Board of Governors that took place virtually on June 28, 2021, Matazu was elected by the board members of ACMAD as the chairperson to serve for a four-year term.

The African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development, ACMAD is the Weather and Climate Centre with African continental competence. It was created in 1987 by the Conference of Ministers of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

ACMAD has been operational in Niamey since 1992. ACMAD is composed of 53 member states, the 53 countries of the African continent. To ensure its mission, ACMAD functions primarily with meteorologists detached by its Members States.
Matazu’s appointment as the Chairperson of ACMAD further solidifies Nigeria’s position as a reference point when meteorological issues in Africa and indeed the entire world are discussed.
