No harm in recalling Ighalo, says Fatai Amoo

Former U-23 national team coach, Fatai Amoo, has said the current invitation of retired Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, to the national team ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde, should not be a cause for concern. Speaking with our correspondent, the current U-17 coach said the former Manchester United striker is not going to be the first player to be in that situation and people should not see it as a step backwards. Amoo revealed that the coming of the player will help the younger ones in the team as his experience will be useful for the squad as a whole.

“The first question we should ask ourselves is if the player is still doing well at the club level, which I am sure everyone will answer in affirmative,” he said. “I am sure the coach has a reason for inviting him to the team. He should be of great help especially for the younger strikers in the team because of his experience at the highest level.

“The truth is, he is not the first one to return to their national team and I am sure he is not going to be the last one.” It would be recalled that Ighalo retired from the national team after becoming the highest goal scorer at the last Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt where the Super Eagles finished third, winning the bronze medal. There have been divergent opinions about his recall to the national team especially with other younger players like Taiwo Awoniyi doing very well in Europe.
