NPC moves to conduct census before 2023 elections

The National Population Commission (NPC) said it was making arrangements to conduct census before the 2023 general elections. The NPC Chairman, Nasir Kwarra, on Thursday said the budget for the census had been submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari for onward transmission to the National Assembly for approval.

Kwara, who disclosed that the commission had commencement the fieldwork for the 2nd Pre-test for the next population and house census, also said Buhari would make a pronouncement on the census soon. According to the NPC chief, the budget for the census and timeline of May 2022 have been submitted to the Federal Government. He said, “We will not be doing all these preparations if we have not gotten any response from President Muhammadu Buhari. I can assure you that Buhari will soon make a proclamation to Nigerians.

“We have done our budget and timeline, and we have submitted it to the government and they have gone through it and the budget proposal will be submitted to the National Assembly along with the timeline. We are still proposing May 2022. But if along the line we are not able to meet that target of course we are flexible and we are able to take another option. “But I think having a census before the 2023 election to me is better than conducting it before elections.”
