Nyanya market fire: Over 20 shops, property worth N200m burnt- Traders

Traders at the Nyanya Market said they lost over 20 shops and property worth over N200 million to the fire that gutted the market late night on Tuesday. The fire said to have been caused by a sudden power surge in one of the shops, had razed down many shops in the fabrics and electronics section of the market before the arrival of FCT Fire fighters. The Chairman, Nyanya Traders Association, Ahmed Shehu, said the damages were huge, because the fire fighters failed to respond promptly to the traders distress cry. According to Shehu, the Fire Service in Nyanya was contacted around 7pm, when the fire started, but they failed to come, claiming that they had no water tankers. One of the victims, Isaac Ndubuisi, said he owns an electronic shop with goods worth about N25m, all lost to the fire. Meanwhile, the Head of Operation, FCT Fire Service, Zachaeus Adebayo, said the rescue operation was difficult, because there was no easy access to the market, as all the spaces were blocked with kiosks. Adebayo called on the Traders Association to discourage the conversion of access roads into shops, as it could hinder prompt rescue operations, in an event of any emergency. He also added that the FCT Administration was working towards building a Fire Service Station at the Nyanya market.
