PCN chair: Opposition mounts against Mora

Pharmacists under the auspices of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) said that Ahmed Tijani Mora carries a heavy moral and ethical burden, which gravely damages his suitability as the chairman of Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN).

They made their position known in an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari. The letter was signed by the President of PSN, Maxi Sam Ohuabunwa and nine past presidents of the PSN from 1991 to date.
The former presidents that also signed the letter included Dr. Philip Emafo,

Senator (Lady) Eme Ekaette, Yakubu Budah, (Dr.) U. N. O. Uwaga and (Sir) Anthony Akhimien.

Others are Azubike Okwor, Olumide Akintayo, and Ahmed Yakasai.

To this end, the association appealed that the PSN be allowed to produce three nominees through the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) from which the federal government would make a credible choice as chairman.
They said, “We believe that whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.”

However, if the Federal Government resisted this call, the PSN said it would declare a total strike involving all hospital and administrative pharmacists in government hospitals, community and industrial pharmacists in the private sector, adding that this might affect the logistics of production and supply of essential as well as other pharmaceutical care services and drugs to the entire health system including the Isolation Centres that caters for COVID-19 cases.

“We shall be left with no choice than to solicit the support of all other health workers for solidarity action to resist this tyranny oOn why this call became necessary, the PSN said it would be wrong to appoint Mora as the chairman of PCN, especially under a government that was preaching probity and integrity.

Also, they alleged that Mora had altered the PCN Act in PCN’s compilation of Pharmacy, Drug & Related Laws and Rules in Nigeria in 2009, to serve his personal agenda.

In addition, he was accused of substituting the PSN list of its representatives on PCN with a list of his cronies at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) in 2009.

The PSN stated, “This matter generated a lot of entropy in 2009 leading to the National Council of PSN to strip Pharm. A. T. Mora of the Fellowship Award of the PSN as well as placing him on the PSN Roll of Dishonour.”
Among other unethical things linked with Mora, he was allegedly sacked as Director of Pharmaceutical Services by the Kaduna State Government.

“He was sacked as the managing director/chief executive officer of Zaria Pharmaceuticals, manufacturers of Zarinject Syringes by the Ahmed Markarfi Government of Kaduna State.

“He was forced out as Registrar/Secretary of the Pharmacists Council in 2011, after a tortuous battle with the PSN in his effort to elongate his tenure after the two-term limit of four years each, totaling eight years.”
