PSC: Poor funding, lack of decent barracks hampering policing

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has identified inadequate funding, absence of decent barracks accommodation and poor welfare as some of the challenges militating against policing in the country. Chairman of the Commission, Mr Musiliu Smith, raised the concerns yesterday in his office in Abuja, during a visit by a delegation from Germany. Led by the deputy director for West and Central Africa, German Foreign Affairs, Mr Alevander Calliegaro, the delegation sought collaboration with the Federal Government in the area of police reform, including training. Addressing the visiting German team, the PSC boss said given the right funding and environment, police officers and personnel have the capacity to excel.

The retired inspectorgeneral of police cited the laurels won by officers on international peace keeping missions as an indication of the gallantry that defines the police force. He, therefore, called for improved funding, among others, with a view to helping the lot of the police, amid increasing security challenges across the country. “We have about 300,000 policemen.

I don’t think we have a third of police personnel in decent barracks accommodation,” the former police chief noted. According to him, the environment has not helped in advancing the cause of standard policing in the country. Also deserving immediate attention, he argued, are police training facilities in parts of the country, especially those with primary focus in investigation and intelligence. Other fundamental areas that could promote police reforms, he added, are: attractive/motivating emolument, pension for all personnel, modern training facilities, building of in-door shooting range, and efficient mobility and communication equipment. Earlier, the leader of the German delegation pledged the readiness of the European nation to train policemen in weapon- handling, as well as “how to handle demonstrations without shooting” at protesters.
