Reps pass bill to establish creche at workplaces

The House of Representatives yesterday passed for seconding a bill seeking to establish creches (childcare) in public and private workplaces for nursing mothers to boost breastfeeding . The bill sponsored by Sergius Ogun (PDP, Edo) seeks to amend the Labour Act 1971 to compel every employer to “provide a creche facility within the precincts of the workplace” to enable nursing mothers to “keep their sucking children within work hours under the watch of a nanny employed by the employer at a reasonable fee”. Leading the debate on the bill during plenary session, Ogun said the provisions of the Labour Act providing a four-month maternity leave for nursing mothers might be enough for exclusive breastfeeding for up to six months as recommended. The lawmaker said exclusive breastfeeding has the potential to provide stronger immunity, reduced risk of infections and resistance to childhood diseases.
