Residents of some communities in Sabon Birni and Isa local government areas of Sokoto State have confirmed that bandits have appointed their commanders as the new district heads of these communities. This is even as Sokoto Police Command dismissed the claiming, saying there is no veracity in the claim by the residents.
However, our correspondent in the state gathered that the villages affected include Gangara and Makwaruwa communities in Gobir District of Sabon Birni Local government area of the state. The command in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Sanusi Abubakar, said investigation reveals that the claim of bandits imposing heads on Sabon Birni villages is not sub-stantiated. Meanwhile, a member in the State House of Assembly, representing the Sabon Birni Local Government area, Aminu Almustapha Gobir, confirmed the introduction of the levies by the bandits.
Gobir stated that already the communities have agreed to pay the levies so that the bandits can stop attacking them. Also, it was gathered that the newly posted district heads were believed to be the ‘errands boys’ of the notorious bandits’ kingpin, Bello Turji, popularly known as ‘Dudde’. The posting of the new community head of Gangara town happened after a crucial meeting was held on Thursday October 4 at Saturu village between the bandits and villagers. Local sources revealed that those at the meeting were five Turji’s commanders that include an Bawalo, Boka Tamise, Hassan an waro, Dogo and Jammu Baƙi.
