Sit-at-home: Enugu residents continue to live in fear, as schools, banks, markets remain shut

Despite the leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) having cancelled the weekly sit-at-home order in the South East Nigeria, residents of Enugu State have continued to obey the order for fear of attacks by hoodlums.

This is as markets, shops, schools, banks and government offices were shut Monday in apparent fear of attack by hoodlums who have continued to enforce the weekly sit-at-home in disobedience to IPOB instructions.

Even some schools that wanted to dare the consequences by opening their schools were forced to shut the gates quickly following an unverified rumour of an attack on schools in Enugu.

The school authorities reportedly asked parents to withdraw children and wards.

Enugu State appears to be the only state in the region where the sit-at-home is still effective as other sister states like Ebonyi, Anambra, Imo and Abia seem to be shrugging it off as residents go about their businesses.

However, some private schools have been carrying on school activities despite the sit-at-home, while others augment with Saturday schooling.

This is happening despite assurances from Ohanaeze, ecclesiastical and government authorities that the era of sit-at-home was over, and the call for resumption of normal activities.

However, it is not easily discernible why the protests in Enugu though many allude to fear of attack by suspected enforcers.
