Study links insomnia to fatal brain bleeds

Researchers in the United States have found that insomnia is a risk factor for often-fatal  brain bleeds also known as brain aneurysm.

These are the results of a new study published online in the ‘Journal of the American Heart Association (AHA)’. In a study of about 70,000 adults, the researchers found that people with a genetic predisposition to insomnia, a sleep disorder in which an individual has trouble falling and/or staying asleep, were at somewhat higher risk of a brain aneurysm.

An aneurysm is a weak spot in an artery wall that bulges out and fills with blood. In some cases, it can rupture and cause life-threatening bleeding.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), brain aneurysms are seen in about three per cent of adults worldwide. The vast majority do not rupture, but about 2.5 per cent of them do.

Data from the United States National Institutes of Health (NIS) show that about 25 per cent of people who suffer those brain bleeds die within 24 hours. Senior researcher Susanna Larsson agreed that more work is needed to understand what is going on.
