TCN: Strike disrupts power supply to FCT, five states

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) yesterday alerted the nation of a blackout following a disruption in power transmission to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and five adjoining states.

The General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, who disclosed this through a statement sent to media houses, said the disruption followed a shutdown of power distribution facilities by the workers union of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) over some in-house grievances.

According to Mbah, the disruption would affect Abuja as well as the other five states under the AEDC franchise, namely Nasarawa, Kogi, parts of Edo, Niger and Kaduna states.

The statement read thus: “The management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) hereby informs the general public that it has available bulk power for delivery to the distribu  tion load centres of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to off take for its customers.

“However, power evacuation from injection substations  across the AEDC franchise area has been disrupted following a shutdown of the AEDC facilities by its in-house workers union.

The areas under AEDC franchise include Abuja, Nasarawa, Kogi, parts of Edo, Niger and Kaduna states.

“TCN regrets this disruption and assures Nigerians that normal bulk power delivery to AEDC will be restored as soon as the injection substations are opened for onward electricity supply to consumers.”

It will be recalled that employees of AEDC had in the early hours of Monday downed tools and embarked on an indefinite strike over non- payment of the bonuses, pensions and other sundry industrial relations issues.
