Tension in Edo as Speaker tests positive to virus

There was anxiety in Edo State yesterday as Governor Godwin Obaseki went into self-isolation over the scourge of the deadly Coronavirus.

This is as the state government disclosed that the index case in Edo State is the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr. Frank Okiye.

Okiye tested positive to the Coronavirus and is now in stable condition and also receiving treatment.

Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Philip Shaibu, disclosed these during a press briefing held at the Government House, Benin.

Shaibu said that a total of 111 persons who may have had direct and indirect contacts with the governor are presently being tracked.

Also a total of 65 persons were said to have contacts with the state chief executive out of which six have been isolated while sample tests have been taken from five of them.

“The governor has maintained social distance and has avoided contacts with people since he came back from Abuja,” the deputy governor said.

He disclosed further that the state government has purchased 40 drums of sanitizer meant to be distributed free to citizens of the state across the 18 local government areas, palaces and other public centres in the three senatorial districts of the state.

The Deputy Governor explained that Speaker Okiye travelled to the United Kingdom and, on his return, he quickly went into self-isolation.

He added that two of the speaker’s contact which includes his wife and daughter were tested for the Coronavirus and they tested negative.

“He (Frank Okiye) prepared his isolation center moments he came back; he had told his wife before his arrival to prepare a room for him in his house and immediately he returned, he moved into self-isolation and he is in stable condition.

“Only two persons have contacts with him since he came back; his wife and the daughter and they have been tested and found to be negative.”
