Three remanded for dealing in 807.5kg of marijuana

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of a Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the remand of three men for allegedly dealing in 807.5kg of cannabis sativa, also known as marijuana. The order was sequel to the arraignment of the trio by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Two of the three men; Jelili Kamoru and Sodiq Oduola were arraigned on a count charge of dealing in 803kg of marijuana while the third person, Adebayo Seun, was docked on a count charge of dealing in 4.5kg of the banned substance.

They however denied the alleged offence following which the NDLEA’s lawyer, Jerry Aerna, sought for their remand in the custody of Nigerian Correctional Service pending conclusion of their cases.

Responding, defence lawyer, Uche Okoronkwo, told the court that he has a pending motion for bail for two of the defendants, Jelili Kamoru and Sodiq Oduola. He subsequently moved the bail motion, following which the judge fixed today for ruling.

On the third defendant, the lawyer pleaded with the court for a short adjournment to file his bail motion, saying he was just briefed. In granting the defence lawyer’s request, Justice Aneke adjourned for hearing of the bail motion.

The judge while adjourning the case also ordered all the defendants to be remanded in Ikoyi Correctional Centre. In the charge, NDLEA alleged that the defendants and others at Large, on October 15, 2021, at Akala, Mushin, LGA of Lagos State, conspired among themselves and unlawfully dealt in 807.5kg of marijuana.

The offences were said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 11(c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
