Tribunal rejects NNPP’s appeal for cancellation of Ogun LG poll

The Ogun State Local Government Election Petition Tribunal in Abeokuta has dismissed all 12 election petitions filed by the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) seeking the cancellation of the July 24 council poll in 11 local government areas.

The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) had de-clared the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of all the 20 chairmanship and 236 councillorship seats. But the NNPP challenged APC’s victory at the tribunal. The petitioner joined APC and the elected chairmen of Yewa South, Yewa North, Ado-Odo/Ota, Ewekoro, Ifo, Abeokuta North, Obafemi-Owode, Imeko-Afon, Odeda, Ijebu North councils, as well as councillor of Ward 14 (Imala) Abeokuta North as second and third respondents respectively.

The opposition party prayed the tribunal to, among other things, determine and declare that the 11 chairmen and Imala Ward 14 councillors were not duly elected and should not have been returned. The petitioner also asked the tribunal to order OGSIEC to withdraw the certificates of return issued to the elected officers or, in the alternative, issue an order for a fresh election in all the polling units mentioned in the petition.
