…UK’s discriminatory policy punitive, indefensible – FG

The Federal Government has described as unfair, punitive, indefensible and discriminatory, the decision by the British government to put Nigeria on red list due to the fact that few of her citizens tested positive to COVID-19 new variant, Omicron.

Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed, at a press conference in Abuja, noted that whereas British citizens  surand residents are allowed to come in from Nigeria, nonresidents from the same country were banned. Mohammed wondered why Britain would not allow people in both categories to come in, and be subjected to the same conditions of testing and quarantine.

He said: “This is why this decision to ban travellers from Nigeria, who are neither citizens nor residents, is grossly discriminatory and punitive.”

The minister noted that less than two dozen out of over 200 million Nigerians teste positive to omicron whereas Britain is placing a ban on the whole population.

According to him, putting a travel ban on some African countries, could be detrimental to the continent’s quest to conclusively tackle the pandemic.

He added: “Instead of these reflex responses that are driven by fear, rather than science, why can’t the world take a serious look at the issue of access to vaccines, and ensure that it is based on the principles grounded in the right of every human to enjoy the highest attainable standard of health without discrimination on the basis of race.
