We’ve no structure to win Edo election –PDP chieftain

A former Director of Communications in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Elder Okharedia Ihimekpen, has said that the PDP in Edo State has no political structure to muscle the All Progressives Congress (APC) out of power in the September 19, 2020 gubernatorial election.

The PDP chieftain, who was the Chief Press Secretary to former governor Lucky Igbinedion, has always questioned the competency of PDP leaders in the state to conduct free, fair and credible party primaries. Arguing that party leaders have decided to favour one aspirant as against the wish of the majority, Ihimekpen noted that the situation could make people lose confidence in the party. He also claimed that some PDP leaders are nocturnally romancing the APC and have allegedly collected ‘bribes’ from a particular aspirant.

“From what is playing out now, the PDP doesn’t seem to be ready for this election. If you take a critical look at the scenario, most of our party leaders are already taking side with a particular aspirant. “Some of them have collected nonrefundable gift items from aspirant. And the person they are fronting for does not have the political pedigree to win an election, particularly with the ongoing political feud in APC. Most of our leaders are PDP in the daytime and in the night, they become APC”, he said. Ihimekpen also faulted the current leadership of the PDP, whom he said is not acting true to opposition type, while revealing that the PDP has sealed a deal to handover the party’s ticket to the state governor, Godwin Obaseki. He said: “The new leadership of our party is not acting like the opposition we ought to be. Again, the caliber of PDP aspirants vying to fly the PDP flag are not person that you can stake our your neck for. “I’m a core PDP man, I have paid my dues on this job, and at my age, I should not be afraid to tell people the truth.

PDP lost it twice and for us to get it back, a lot of changes must be made. Our people must put the interest of the party first. “Our aspirants are not showing total commitment to this election, PDP is hoping to grab power through the court, at times it does not work like that. For us to regain our lost glory, we must seat up.” “Look I have stayed long in the Edo State political terrain; I know what our politicians are capable of doing, all these noise they are making, denying knowledge of Obaseki coming to take PDP ticket or not, has been concluded long time ago.

“The so-called leaders in the party are not telling people the truth. I have always said that the present Exco of PDP will sell out at the end, and that is exactly what has happened.”
