Why Afrobeat is special, by Davido

Davido has revealed the uniqueness of Afrobeats sound just as also clarified the issue of his birthday fundraising. In a recent zoom interview with CNN, the Afrobeats superstar explained why Afrobeats genre is special for those who don’t know pretty much about it. According to Davido, Afrobeats is one music genre with a distinctly lovable sound which symbolises the entirety of the African continent. “I mean it has a story behind it. Apart from the fact that it’s rich music, it represents a whole culture. It represents a whole continent which is Africa.

I grew up on hip hop. I used to love hip hop. “But I used to play Afrobeats when I was in Alabama. My Caucasian friends and American friends will be like, “Yo! What’s that? I like that sound.” ‘‘So, I always knew that when people heard it, they’d love it.”

While addressing his birthday fundraising, the “If ” singer said it started out as a joke since he had a bet with his friends and more importantly, he never asked fans to donate but his ‘friends/ colleagues.’ It is, however, important to note that Davido received N200m donation from close associates, fans and colleagues and as part of giving back to the society, he made the announcement that the entire donation will be distributed across accredited registered government orphanage homes. He added N50m of his money to it, making a total of N250m to be shared out to charity organisations by the foundation, which he set up for the purpose.
