Why Rohr escaped sack on Tuesday

…federation to boost Eagles’ bench with Eguavoen, experts

Super Eagles Manager Gernot Rohr would have kissed his job goodbye if not for the insistence of the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, who said the German coach had not breached his contract and re-echoed the financial implications of sacking him. Our correspondent r e l i a b l y learnt that there was an emergency meeting of the NFF executive committee after the poor showing of the Super Eagles in their 1-1 draw with Cape Verde in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday where the future of the coach was extensively discussed.

A source said the majority of the members of the executive wanted the coach to be sacked immediately but another group led by Pinnick insisted it was not the right way to go because the coach hasn’t defaulted in all the clauses of his current contract. Pinnick’s group reportedly argued that the coach was given the mandate to qualify for both the African Cup of Nations and the World Cup.

He is also mandated to get to at least the final of the next AFCON in Cameroon. “Pinnick and co insisted the coach was on course having qualified the team for A F C O N and progressed into the last round of the World Cup qualifiers. They argued that the coach was not given the task of playing ‘beautiful football’ and sacking him may amount to a breach of contract on the side of the NFF and will cost them so much money they can’t afford at the moment. “That argument from the Pinnick’s group held sway and it was agreed that the coach should be allowed to continue,” the source.”
