‘Why we buried our 8 children without autopsy’

Parents of the eight children found dead in a Lexus Spots Utility Vehicle at Adelayo Street, Jah-Michael Agunaje area of Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Lagos State, have explained why they had to bury theirchildrenwithoutautopsy.

 

A father to two of the diseased children, Mr. Ibrahim Jubril, said they decided to bury their children after a hospital where they took the children for autopsy demanded a N100,000 for each for the dead child amounting to N800,000, an amount they could not afford. a father to two of the deceased children

 

The eight children were found dead in the vehicle parked in front of the owner’s compound on Saturday eveningafteralongsearchbyfamiliesandneighboursof parents of the deceased children. The children were buried amidst tears according to Islamic rites around 11am on Sunday without an autopsy being conducted on them. Mark Akande, the founder of Society for Youth Advancement and Creativity Initiative (SHACo), whovisitedthescene on Sunday, said that the incident happened around 5p.m. on Saturday and the children were buried after attempts to conduct autopsy on them failed. Theparentsreportedlytook the children to the General Hospital in Badagry and the Lagos State University TeachingHospital( LASUTH), where they were told to bring N100, 000eachforthehospitaltoconduct autopsy on the children  “The parents decided not totakethemfor autopsyatLASUTH. They said it is against Islamic laws to spend money onthedead,” MrAkandesaid. One of the elders in the neighbourhood, who declined giving his name, said the children were supposed to be at Islamic lessons at the time of the incident and no one suspected that they had entered the parked vehicle.

Afsat Isiaka, a mother who lost three children in the incident, was found in a mourning state amidst sympathisers in her compound, which is close to where the incident happened. She said it was a big loss for her and the husband, wondering when they are going to have such grown up children at their age, adding however that they have accepted their fate.

 

“I don’t know what happened, my co- wife went to search for the children, when a woman came to call me that I should come, that they have found the children in a parked vehicle, when I got there all the children had already died and the owner had to rush in to bring the car key before we  were able to open it. “When we brought them out foam was coming out of their mouth.”

 

She identified her children asAbdulwahab(5), YakubIsiaka (5), and Zainab (3). Another parent, Mr. Ibrahim Jubril, a father to two of the deceased children, was alsofoundsurroundedbysympathisers in his compound. Mr Jubril said Neigbours had already recovered the bodies of the children before he got to the scene only to see theremainsof hischildrenon the ground.

 

“Some people wanted to take their corpse to hospital and I am a Muslim. But eventually I allowed them to take them, wewenttoGeneralHospital, that same Sunday and police gave us paper, when we gottoBadagryGeneralHospital,

 

They wanted to refer us to Lagos State University TeachingHospital( LASUTH), Ikeja, whenwegotthereweweretold that each person should pay N100,000 before they would check the children, that’s N800,000 for the eight and we couldn’t afford it and we came back home and buried them.”
