Zoning’s moral obligation in PDP –Senator Bassey

Senator Gershom Bassey is a frontline aspirant for the governorship seat of Cross River State and the Cross River caucus leader in the National Assembly. In this interview with CLEMENT JAMES, he talks on a number of issues

We understand that the National Assembly granted Mr. President requests to get loans before asking for details. Why

? We have the relevant details and the committee duly scrutinised the Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs), justification for the funds before making recommendations to the Senate.

What has the National Assembly members brought to the state? I’m sure th

at all members can answer this question positively. Personally, I will soon publish my scorecard for the 8th and 9th assembly. It will give all account of my activities. I am sure that you will give me an ‘A’ after evaluating it.

What is your opinion on zoning?

Zoning is a moral and equity-based question and a resolution passed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus. One leg of that resolution was zoning the gubernatorial seat to the North in 2015. Now, the second leg is zoning the seat to the South and this must also be implemented.

In an interview with Channels Television, former governor, Mr. Donald Duke, discountenanced zoning. What would you say to that?

That’s an old interview. His current position has changed. He supports the Southern Senatorial District. That is an old politically motivated story. Go and ask again.

On what basis are you likely to contest for governorship?

My empowerment programmes, inflows to the state and generosity are unparalleled. That is why after my consultations, if I decide to run, it will be with or without zoning. It will be based primarily on my record, qualifications and capacity.

Sandy Onor, from the Central Senatorial district also nurses the ambition of running as governor. What is your plan to overcome this given the fact that he is close to Government Nyesom Wike of Rivers State?

Don’t single out Sandy. There are many contestants or potential contestants and I welcome them all. With respect to His Excellency, Governor Wike, I do not understand your question. He is a friend to all of us.

Finally, if you happen to win the nomination, how will you contend with the incumbent governor?

As I had earlier said, if I decide to run, my record, qualification, capacity and unparalleled empowerment programs within the state will speak for itself, regardless of the opposition.
